Viewsonic V37
I bought a Viewsonic PocketPC mid to late last year and forgot to post anything about it.
I bought a Viewsonic V37 for $100 used on ars technica classifieds. It has the following for specifications:
- Intel XScale™ 400MHz processor
- Microsoft® Pocket PC 2003 Premium Edition*
- Includes 64MB ROM and 64MB SDRAM (36.45MB user accessible)
- Light: 4 ounces
- Long life lithium battery lasts up to 8 hours**
- SD/MMC Expansion slot
* It came with PocketPC 2002. Apparently Viewsonic had the update but was neither giving it out nor selling it anymore. I was able to locate it and have it archived. If anyone also needs it, comment on this post and leave your e-mail and I can get it to you.
** This has not been what I have experienced.
The pocketpc has been nearly flawless for me. It is the same speed and about half the weight and size of my previous PocketPC: Dell Axim X5. There are a couple of pros and cons of this PocketPC compared to some others I’ve had:
+ Small, light, sleek design.
+ Bright, crisp screen.
+ Fast, still one of the fastest on the market.
+ SD expansion slot is great for storage.
- Short battery life, especially for games.
- Very poor dial. Sticks, and plain doesn’t work sometimes.
- Some game incompatibility*.
- Synching issues**.
- Lack of general support***.
* I have tested MANY games on this PocketPC. Of all that I have tested, only about 3 have not worked. The main game that I am upset about is Worms World Party by JAMDAT. It simply does not open.
** Every once in awhile, the only computer I have my V37 linked up to will report the device as an unknown device. To fix, any of the following have worked for me in the past:
- Unplugging/Replugging
- Plugging into a different USB port
- Reseating the V37 in the synch cradle
*** This PocketPC is nowhere near as popular as Dell or HP PocketPCs, and I have found very little support overall for this brand. Viewsonic only made 2-3 PocketPC models; the V35-V37, all of which are out of production. Don’t even think about contacting Viewsonic for support, these are all out of warranty.
Overall, I would rate this PocketPC an 9/10. It is my 5th PocketPC, and it is by far the best.

Has anyone experienced any problems with their V37 after the upgrade, specifically to do with the buttons and scroll wheel producing a repeating type effect, ie if i scroll pages in MS reader it tends to skip a random number of pages, anywhere between 1 -5 pages etc and using the D-Pad for games is akward as it seems to be erratic as well. It never did that before the upgrade.
Raybdbomb Said,
July 22, 2005 @ 7:09 pm
My D-Pad is messed up, but I didn’t contribute it to the upgrade (I never used it pre-2003).

Weird… last I heard they were giving it away for free, like Dell was doing. There’s no reason they should be charging for it, a generic update is available for free from microsoft.com; so they really should not be charging, it’s unethical.
Jo B (no relation to above user) Said,
July 25, 2005 @ 9:38 am
They gave it away for a short time, and only for people who had bought their PDA less than 30 days before the offer began and up to 90 days after. I think you might have had to provide some sort of proof of date of purchase, also.
Jo B (no relation to above user) Said,
July 25, 2005 @ 9:51 am
BTW, do you think the v37 is any faster than the v35? My v35 even benchmarked better than my friend’s v37…
Raybdbomb Said,
July 25, 2005 @ 10:09 am
Is that so? Well, 400MHz compared to 300MHz, you’d think the results would be obvious. However, if you don’t have the speed setting to “auto” you should get better results.
Also, there are some overclocking tools for PPC now.

o yes, it worked! the first time I tried to post it blocked me.
back to the point. I don’t see how 100mhz can make that much of an improvement anyway, and it pisses me off that viewsonic couldn’t put forth a little ingenuity when replacing the v35. One thing I would have loved to see in Viewsonic’s pda’s is metal casing. Honestly, I have no problem with a handheld computer which weighs in the same as a 20gb ipod, and I thing plastic casing, which can easily crack and is generally not as strong as metal, is not an acceptible compromise.
Viewsonic does make nice pdas tho.

thank you so much for posting this upgrade. do you know of any reason as to why i cant get into the upgrade mode in the v37? ive reset it a million times and have been holding the dial down while i turn it back on and i wait for 3 seconds and let go and then it goes in to the loading screen to reload windows 2002. and i just have to reset the screen settings and what not. any suggestions?
four2theizz0 Said,
October 11, 2005 @ 10:40 am
ok well, apparently there was a bug or some other firmware for some v37′s. and you have to puch the dial buttin IN, and not down towards the record button. anyways, that is done but nnow once i get into the upgrade tool, it says connection error on the installer. like the guy above
Steven J Henthorn Said,

I loaded the Upgrade easily once I found out you had to Push the scroll button in, instead of move it down to get into upgrade mode.

After opening mine up to glue a bit of the cover that was cracked my v37 (edition 2002) is also reading 100% despite extensive use. I had the battery switch off before I opened it. The more concerning thing is that it is also refusing to charge! When you plug it in, the light flickers orange for half a second then turns off. Battery screen shows running on AC when plugged in. Any ideas?

has anybody found a solution for the connection error message? after going through the reset steps and getting to the blue screen and choosing ’0′ . i hit next on the installer it takes a second and then it sasys connect error. has anybody else found a solution to this? thanks
Bob Said,
October 24, 2005 @ 7:54 am
I was getting the connect error too. Then I ran through the XP new hardware wizard (before I had been closing the window or selecting cancel). I forget the details I selected, but it was something like “don’t look on the web,” “use supplied” – whatever sounded least intrusive. It tried to install a reference Intel xScale something and then failed because it couldn’t find a file.
Then the upgrade wizard could connect OK.
Raybdbomb Said,
October 24, 2005 @ 10:23 am
I had an error connecting once upon a time, and intermittently at that point. What I did was disconnected it from the USB and reconnected it multiple times until it worked.
It may or may not be the same error you had.

i.e. either make it faster or fix the big button so I can zoom in and out of a map like I could on my Toshiba e740 PDA?

I have successfully upgraded and downgraded my V37 between 2002 and 2003 many many times for development and testing reasons. Anyone looking for the downgrade can find the files on the viewsonic ftp site. You use the same process as you do when you upgrade, only you replace the .bin file for v2003 with the .bin file for 2002 before you perform the gymnastics.
To get the username and password call viewsonic support, tell them that you need to get the downgrade located in:
/Techsupport/V37 Downgrade Image
from their vsg.viewsonic.com ftp site. This is how I got the files and their support person was very helpful but it did take them a little while to pull up info on what a V37 was. I don’t think they get many support calls for them anymore.
I’d post the username and password but Viewsonic may consider it semi-confidential. You may be able to find the username and password through a http://groups.google.com search for something like:
viewsonic ftp site

I’m hoping it would make Tom Tom 5 run faster if this extra 36mb of space was freed up.

I also wanted to say thank you. I wanted to play SudoPocket on my VPC and noticed that it required .NET Compact Framework version 2. This is only supported on Windows Mobile Software for Pocket PC 2003.
I downloaded the ZIP for my V37 and followed the instructions (I had to push not press down the wheel). It’s sweet! I’m now running Pocket PC 2003.
I downloaded the .NET Framework and SudoPocket and it works beautifully. Now I can play Sudoku on my VP37!
I was alittle worried about the upgrade after reading about it on other boards, but it really went smoothly. I wanted to be able to “downgrade” back to 2002, so I downloaded the ROM from the Viewsonic site. The information I used was:
ftp://vsg.viewsonic.com
Login: techsupp
Password: !VSOTftp
The folder was /Techsupport/V37 Downgrade Image/
There is a .BIN and a .ZIP file. You don’t need both (the .ZIP file contains a compressed .BIN file). There’s also a text file that describes the “downgrade” process. Thankfully, I didn’t need it.
There is some jerk selling a “direct download” of the ROM on eBay. He’s located in Hungary and is charging $6. I don’t think you get a CD and he seems to be selling it multiple times.
So, thanks again for providing the upgrade. I really appreciate your breathing new life into my Pocket PC.

Sorry for reposting, the reason I need the downgraded v37 rom to PPC 2002 is because I backed up some contacts and calendar stuff, and it will not restore to the PPC 2003 ROM, so I want to restore that, and sync it with outlook first, before putting the 2003 back on again

I think I figured out the “connect error” issue. I too encountered it 3 times…which made me sit back and read the upgrade PDF from start-to-finish. The key is in step 10 – ” … highlighted. Then press the scroll dial to select this option, and …”. If you miss to select the option by pressing the scroll dial, you will get a connect error!
Also, as mentioned in the post elsewhere, pressing the scroll dial, instead of rotating, during the cold-boot did help. I got the V37 as part of the MSDN promotion.

Hi every body who successed in updating ROM to PPC2003.
In first try, I failed.
I did steps from 1 to 8 and it ok.
In step 9, when I connected my Pocket to PC by USB cable (USB 1.1),“Found New Hardware Wizard” message displays, I choose “Use only this time” and press “Next”, A driver “Intel XScalse Design” installed but it say: “It is installed but it not working”. I press OK to finish.
What happened with me? Because ActiveSync don’t connect to Pocket to upgrade ROM. Thanks.

This is the only place I’ve seen so far that seems to know the PC V37 better than Viewsonic support. Maybe someone can help me. I’ve had problems on and off with this stupid thing (don’t get me wrong, it’s a great device, just a little spacey). Sometimes it loses its battery power and then never comes back up. I have to go through this process of cold booting over and over again until it finally wakes up. The problem I’m having now though, is while trying to upgrade the ROM, I can’t get it to go into upgrade mode. I turn it off (switch on the back not the power button), wait a few seconds, hold the scroll key down, boot it back up, wait three seconds and release, and it either does nothing, or goes into the please wait 30 seconds screen. Any advice? Anyone?
cj Said,

To upgrade the ROM, some of the models need the wheel to be rolled down (towards the headphone jack) for 3 seconds, and I just learned that some (including mine) need the scroll wheel pressed in instead (no rolling) for 3 seconds. Whichever one you tried, try the other

- second of all i have opened it up and found a white 8-pin connector inside, i wonder what its for, because if its for memory i would like to use it to leave the expansion slot available for a WiFi SD SDIO card
- third of all i would like to know if there is any way to connect two devices, for example a SD memory card and a WiFi SD SDIO card on the same expansion slot

Daniel,
1) It’s something like this. 32MB for My Flash, 32MB for
User by default. The SD card can be read/written to
at least 256MB (the biggest SD I have) that I know of,
but only good for 32MB install. And if you really want
sleep soundly, do those SD libraries first, because,
1. It will take just under forever to fill 32MB of SD
space from 4MB (&c.) of free program/storage mem.
2. No, I guess that’s about it.
Slow and hard to tell if it’s just stopped responding
because it’s crashed, or just buried alive.
2) Diagnostic port — how thoughtful. You have to lance
the battery out with a razor, but there’s always room
for a logic probe.
3) Don’t know. Viewsonic doesn’t make one.
All,
Thanks for the links. esp. Raybdbomb for keeping this
page.
Problems on the folding keyboard scene.. As far as I can
see, the kb itself is a Benq generic used by HP (FA118A)
as well.. probably others. G7M0, aka ppc-kyb-001 .. I
don’t think it’s a hardware matter, but VS and Benq don’t
have anything to say.
I’m going to attempt to downgrade one of my two V37s

Amazing how a topic like this lives for so many years. Thanks for the resource Ray.
I have colleagues who are curious about PDA development but not sure how to go about implementing some specifics for our industry. So I thought I’d take my unused V37 out of the dusty desk drawer, upgrade to WM2003, then use it to create some demos. It’s not like the V37 is a target platform, for me it’s just a tool for prototyping. So I’m very happy to find this web page and I hope it never gets taken down.
I am going through the steps to upgrade WM2002 to 2003. I’d really like to get my hands on the WM2002 ROM before doing this though – the cost for failure is that I’ll have to go buy a new PDA. I guess I’ll have to contact ViewSonic like everyone else – unless someone can provide the file somewhere?
Thanks to all for good comments and info here! I’ll post info about my experience, maybe a link to my blog if I have anything of value to contribute.

WM2003 upgrade was success and went exactly as documented. I don’t see a need to downgrade. I’m having problems getting new .NET code that I just wrote to run on the device but I’m confident this has nothing to do with the upgrade – unless someone here says there’s something special that needs to be done to get Compact Framework code to run in this OS release. Good stuff, thanks again!
Starbuck Said,

Final follow-up: Getting .NET code to run on WM2003 requires installation of the .NET Compact Framework runtime. My PPC is running well and now that I have a verified ROM for Windows the only thing I can think of to do next is to install Linux …

Outstanding!
I’ve got a V37 (an MSDN ‘bonus’) and missed the short window of upgrading to 2003 which I didn’t think to check for until I ran into software that required it. I looked for months and could not find an upgrade anywhere.
A few weeks ago I bought a couple of 2GB MicroSD cards for my audio player which came w/ an SD adapter. Out of curiosity I tried it in the V37 and it worked, so I looked again and much to my surprise found this site!
If using the USB method:
1) If rotate scroll button doesn’t put you in upgrade mode, hold scroll button in
2) Be sure you clear the “Allow USB” connection in ActiveSync
3) When ‘new hardware’ dialog appears, select “Not this time” and let search locally. This should install the “Intel XScale Reference” driver.
The upgrade took a few minutes. V37 may actually be useful again!
Since I now have a ROM image, may try an ‘iPaq’ LINUX port (5xxx has same processor as V37). Anyone try LINUX on it?
Kudos for keeping this up!
PS: As noted, V37 will support at least a 2GB SD card.

scrow Said,

These are the steps I took so far:
I formatted my SD card to FAT or FAT16 then copied the bin file you sent me onto the SD card.
Then I plugged in the PPC to the power sorce and did the cold boot as described (scroll down worked for me).
When I saw the “Upgrade Tool v1.0(v37)” screen I inserted the SD Card
Then scrolled down using the scroll down then pushed in (action) to select the “1 = Image Upgrade (SD/MMC) option
Then the Notification/Red LED began to flash and the bottom of the screen showed the following:
Card detected
FAT 16 file system
Disk mounted
I waited about 45 minutes then went home for the night, I came in this morning and found it in the same exact state with the RED LED blinking and the same text at the bottom of the screen. I’m tempted to reboot to see if it worked, but I’m not sure. I’ll let everyone know what I did when I get the guts to do something….
scrow Said,
March 26, 2009 @ 5:05 am
Okay I got the guts to reboot, it looks like nothing happened at all.
I first tried to get the upgrade tool screen again by doing cold boot + scroll down and was able to get the screen again.
Then I tried to reboot into the OS and it came up with PPC2003 still, so it looks like when the file i have did not want to be transfered into the ROM. So I’m going to do a little more research and check again the service manual i got from viewsonic about how they load the image files. Perhaps i have the wrong file type extension or something…
FYI, for everyone else I’m trying to drowngrade from PPC2003 to PPC2002 using SD card. If this doesn’t work I’ll try the USB method next…
scrow Said,
March 26, 2009 @ 6:17 am
Ray,
I just tried loading the PCC2002 image file using the USB method you described and it worked great. I was able to downgrade and run the program that I needed to run. So it looks like you may want to post this new PPC2002 bin file for others since viewsonic is not very helpful. The only difference I saw in my process was when the New Hardware Wizzard popped up I chose “No not at this time” then allowed windows to automatically load a driver of some sort, but perhaps it didn’t load a driver at all. Either way it worked, thanks for you assistance and hosting this thread…
scrow Said,
March 26, 2009 @ 7:56 am
Last post i hope… This downgrade ONLY worked on the V37′s I had, but did not work on the V35 i had, so i had to re-apply the PPC2003 upgrade to the ROM of the V35 and it seems to be functioning on ppc2003 again now. I did not test all the function of the OS for the PPC2002 downgrade on the V37, but it did run my program that I needed to run which was made for the 20002 version of the OS. Hope this helps someone else…

With the upgrade, Windows Vista (Home Premium SP2) can now fully sync to the Mio 338 using Device Centre 6.1
I did the upgrade using the USB method on a XP machine.

I am so grateful to find this site, I’d like a copy of the Viewsonic V37 PPC 2002 image if you still got it, I tried to upgrade with the WM2003_Viewsonic_v37.zip, but after the upgrade process, a “Bad image transferred” error message appeared at the bottom of the V37 Pocket PC screen. When I quited the upgrade mode, the normal V37 boot screen appeared and displayed “Please wait for 30 seconds.” message, after that the “Image checksum error, please coldboot again!!”
I am wondering if the original Viewsonic V37 PPC 2002 image will rectify this error. Please help!!

Hello Raybdbomb,
I’ve perused through all of the comments above and found this site extremely helpful. I’ve just ordered a new battery for my V37 (still waiting for it to arrive) and though I could give back a little by posting the following info:
Purchased new battery from: http://www.ipod99.com/ (search for V37)
Found Foldable keyboard driver for PPC2003 here: http://www.viewsonic.com.pe/support/drivers_mobile.htm#foldable
Found 802.11b-SDIO driver for PPC2003 here: http://www.viewsonic.com.pe/support/drivers_mobile.htm#ppc_sdio
I have not yet installed or tested these drivers from Viewsonic but will as soon as I receive my new battery and get PPC2003 installed on my V37. I will post again once I complete the updates. Cheers and thanks again for keeping the site going for so long.

Been fiddling with my V36 for a while now. Bought it years ago as a straightforward PDA without any internet inclinations.
Purchased a SPECTEC wireless card late last year and fought with it for a while. Seems to be working fairly well now although it hangs up pretty regularly.
The IE program, I guess, runs amok now and again – it’ll start scrolling and won’t quit until it reaches the end of the page then I have to shut down and restart.
Truthfully, I’m very much a novice at this but the unit seems to be pretty much all I need for browsing and email.
There’s a file that hotmail wants me to load in order to use it but I can’t get it to download correctly. I just don’t use hotmail.
Gmail and Yahoo mail both work pretty well as is.

Thanks a lot for hosting the ROM here – I know this is a really old piece of kit, but no sense sending it to landfill just yet!
I’ve just replaced the battery in mine (There’s a great seller on e-bay for batteries for these if anyone’s interested by the way)… I replaced the battery as the original one had finally given up the ghost.
However – I now have a problem – I can’t get windows to see the device (it wouldn’t before I changed the battery either – I had hoped the new battery would solve this problem!)… This means, not only will it not sync (not really bothered about that!) but also I can’t flash the ROM!
I’ve tried copying the files to the SD card and using the flash from SD option in the update util on the device but it doesn’t seem to do anything – comes up with a few messages acknowldging the card but that’s it)
so – please, does anyone know how to flash this using the flash from SD card option? I’m stuck and out of ideas!
Thanks in advance,
Rob.

can someone please post a link to the downgrade WM 2002 installer? I have called and emailed viewsonic, but they won’t budge with a ftp link.
Thanks!
