Invision Power Board 1.3.1
Update 8/31/2006:
Downloads removed. See this post for information and discussion.
Equally as hard to find as a Invision Power Board 1.3 download is the more recent version 1.3.1. It has been sent to me by Aaron.
This is the latest available version of the IPB “1.x” series. Since it’s hard to find, I have archived it on my site.

Can you indicate what the differences are between version 1.3 Final and 1.3.1 Final?
Is it better to stick with 1.3 instead of 1.3.1?
Thanks

Does anyone know exactly what the differences are between 1.3 and 1.3.1? If so, could you detail them please?
Is it better to stick with 1.3 Final than 1.3.1 Final?
Thanks.
Raybdbomb Said,

Sorry I don’t know the differences, but in general it’s best to stick with the latest stable version; in this case the LAST (that I’m aware of) stable version is 1.3.1 Final.
Jason Said,

Firstly, thanks for the download. I love ya for it.
Secondly, 1.3.1 fixes a nasty problem that allows SQL injection. That’s NOT good, and can be a big problem, so it’s best to upgrade to 1.3.1 if you’re using 1.3.0

I don’t care whether it’s illegal or not until I get Invision suing me telling me it is i aint paying for no licenses! For 1.3.0 to be freeware then a bloody upgrade to become license based is ludacris!
NOTHING Said,

Keyword is was. It is illegal to distribute any IPB files. Whether 2.0 or otherwise.
I’m not going to report you. But I did check and someone has reported you to IPS. Although they haven’t seemed to do anything they still may seeing how greedy they are for money…
Why else do you think there are no more copies of IPB 1.3 on the web? Cause it’s illegal to use it. Not necessarily to download but to use it it is illegal.

Steve Said,

Hey, RaybnBomb. IPB 1.31 wasnt the last free board. True, it was the last 1.x series but Invision released IPB 2.0.0 under the 1.3.1 licence. So its still free. However, it was only on their site for a week and thus is a looooooot harder to find than IPB 1.3 or 1.3. Do you think you can find it and archive it on your site? Cause Ive been looking for it for days and I have not found it.. IPB 2.0.0 was the last free board. One week after they released it, they took it down and made every version after that (2.0.1+) paid versions…
There does exist trial versions of IBP but these are encryped limited boards. They have hard coded values that shut off the board when certain limitations are reached (# of posts, members, topics etc etc). IPB 2.0.0 does come up as a free trial but its the only one that is a unlimited trial. its not encrypted, no hard coded limits and its released under the 1.3 licence (as I said before).
So any chance of getting the unlimited trial IPB 2.0.0?
Steve Said,
August 16, 2005 @ 9:07 am
Oh, and all the IPB are freeware to use (excluding the ones above 2.0.1 with that new licence shit)……. so dont bother with that Nothing guy… Hes just some idiot..

I have no affiliation with IPS,
I merely offer some info people may be interested in.
It’s illegal to distribute ANY IPB files, no matter what the version.
But as you can get any version from a number of sources, then IPS are fighting a losing battle
Here’s a copy of IPB license version changes:
IPB Version License Changes
This document outlines the various license changes between IPB 1.3 and IPB 2.0.3
IPB 1.3.0
Invision Power Board 1.3(.0) was released under the very old license which allowed full use indefintely without a purchased license. You can use this version without support indefinitely but there are some well publicised security vulnerabilities which have been fixed in later versions.
IPB 1.3.1
Invision Power Board 1.3.1 was released under the old 'trial' license which allowed full use without a purchased license for evaluation purposes. Although no time limit was imposed for the evaluation period, it was accepted that permanent use requires a purchased license.
IPB 2.0.0
Invision Power Board 2.0.0 was released under the same license as IPB 1.3.1.
IPB 2.0.1 to IPB 2.1.0
These versions of Invision Power Board require a purchased license to run. An encoded trial version is available with hard-coded limits.
Remember, regardless of IPB version you are not allowed to redistribute part, or all of Invision Power Board.
So, IPB 1.3 is ok to use, if you downloaded the files when they were originally released from IPS, BUT it has numerous security risks, however these are patchable.
and IPB 1.3.1 is ok to use, if you downloaded the files when they were originally released from IPS, but the ‘un-defined’ permanent use issue appplies. bitova loophole there
and IPB 2.0.0 is ok to use, with the same conditions that apply to 1.3.1
Hope that helps out some people

Raybdbomb Said,
August 19, 2005 @ 8:00 am
Can you show me where it says (on their license, or their site) that you can’t redistribute their software?
Also, since they’re no longer distributing, I consider it a distribution, not a “re”distribution…
It doesn’t really make sense to me why they would not allow the distribution of OLD free software that is no longer supported…
Sebastian Vlay Said,
August 19, 2005 @ 10:31 am

IPS seems to be down at the moment.
Here’s a link you may find helpful:
http://forums.invisionize.com/index.php?showtopic=68265
It does seem strange, to not allow the distribution of files that were once ‘free’, but it’s only a technicality really, because once you have the file, there’s no way to prove that you didn’t download it during the period that IPS released it.
I’m not claiming to know much about the subject, I’m just imparting some knowledge I’ve picked up along my way

OK, that post looks very old (before they stopped hosting 1.3?). So I’m going to leave it at this: if Invision Power Services wishes that I no longer have this file available (since I don’t believe it’s available anywhere else), they can contact me at raybdbomb@gmail.com and tell me they wish for me to remove it.
Any further comments on the legality of hosting this file will be removed, as it’s now up to IPS.

At Raybdbomb, if it is not illegal I do apologize for any problems I may have caused you over this. It is just my understanding that it is illegal to distribute any IPB files. By the way license it here.

Alright, I guess I can be considered an IPS old timer, and so I’ll say:
- It has been illegal to redistribute IPB files since day 1. From version 1.0, etc. But no, I’m not going to report you. IPS didn’t just make it illegal to use it when they went paid, they couldn’t do that. They just took off the downloads, which, due to the license, was the only legal place it was available.
2. 1.3.1 (not 1.3) made an update which said it was for ‘evaluation’ purposes only and continued use required a licence. Since ‘evaluation’ nor a time limit was ever defined, most people ignored this.
3. 2.0 - same as 1.3.1.
4. 2.0.1 - paid.

Raybdbomb Said,
November 9, 2005 @ 12:43 pm
@warG it’s forum software. Google it.
@Paralex It is now, correct. However, the license referenced on the 1.X boards I believe refers to only the fact whether or not they put “Power by Invision Power Board” in the title and in the footer of every page. It used to be you could pay some money and get that removed.

I love this! Thank you! However, I’ll stick with Invisionfree. Never heard of it? Go to: http://www.invisionfree.com
They offer free versions of IPB 3.1 Final. AND IT’S 100% LEGAL! They got a liscence from IPB and then modified their softwhere. True, it uses css instead of scripts. But people have found a way now to make the IPB 3.1 boards upgrade to IPB 2.0.3!
My forum: http://s13.invisionfree.com/Stargate_Games/
It looks and has almost the exact same features as IPB 2.0.3! ALL FOR FREE! You have to go here to get the upgrade code for the forum: http://s14.invisionfree.com/IFBoard/
It’s easy and cool. And if you look hard enough on the web, you’ll find people who have bought IPB lisceneces and will host you free IPB 2.0.1 forums and higher.
Hope I helped you all out!

Steve Said,
December 11, 2005 @ 2:04 am
Ok I know I am young, I have used IF for about 8-9 years now, yes they have been around that long. I was using their very first software released. Now so everyone knows, it is not illegal to distribute IPB 1.3 Final, 1.3.1 Final or 2.0.0 PF3 as they have stated on their sites it is legal and they will not for any reason ask for you to remove the software. I downloaded it long ago, lost it, found it, lost it and now I am forced to find it online and download so here I am.
All in all, I have learned a great deal of php/mysql coding so fixing security issues with these will not be a problem as I have taught myself IPB, vBulletin, phpBB, Ikonboard, and SMF code for this purpose just in case I have to stick with a free version, of course I bought a license for vbulletin though. All in all, what everyone says about the law, you don’t know the law, you are going by here say and you did not even think to check IPB official site.
I have checked IPB Official Site and they list no reference to IPB 1.3.0, 1.3.1, or 2.0.0 PF3 therefore what is happening here is legal. When it was released for free, it was released under the GPL license meaning anyone could distribute those versions with no interaction from IPB themselves.
So on my last words of that, what is going on here is LEGAL and you wannabees who think you know the law don’t as if you were a long time user of IPB you would remember it was released under the GPL license therefore it can be distributed legally no matter where, it cannot be sold though as that is against the law.
Anyways, I want to say cheers on this and glad to see sites haven’t given up on allowing people to download freeware. Cheers to you Ray and your efforts.

I would love to do what invisionfree.com does but alas, I don’t have the code that they do. I have heard people getting hacked there and I setup IPB sites for friends, their brothers, their friends as long as they prove they ran that board on invisionfree.com so for anyone who got hacked, just look me up and I’ll help you get live again with a hosted site on my server which is hack proof.

About the copyright removal, in the board wrapper settings, just comment out the copyright with normal html comments , soi it looks like this, then it will not be visible, for free.
–>
the auto script that checks for the copyright won’t notice.
btw. thanks for the idea with archive.org

There is an exploit for 1.3.1 series that can be used to get access to any account. Don’t believe it? Check it.

How does it work?
I put in the site, and userid, then get this:
I don’t read whatever language that is… can you explain to me how it works? If so I will make a note of it.
Thanks!

that link is dead.
Ray, there’s a fair few exploits in 1.3.x, but all patchable using Pits security fix, can be found at Ize.
The site you tried that on must either be patched, or the details were wrong. Those pearl hacks (and there are a fair few floating around), allow you to get the password hash, which you can either bruteforce, using something like milw0rm to get the unhashed password or you can manipulate your double-choc-chip cookies to gain access to an account.
The hack works when you see somethign similar to “19644f37c3fdda78e9b45e905c4bbeae9bd11baa”
instead of “00000000000000000000000000000000″.

Well, I used this for my gaming clan…..and we were just hacked and everything was deleted, we had everything customized as well as an arcade with over 60 games. We lost it all..YES we did back it up on the server, but what’s the point? If they could get the admin account once, they can do it again..
MY forums http://www.weare-relentless.com/forum/index.php
The entire board was deleted as well as all the member accounts.

First of all, thanks for the download buddy. I am a complete noob to this though…
I have a server to upload to, but I don’t know how. Can someone please give me a step by step, or at least point me in the right direction, or tutorial link please?

Documentation is included in the file. If you’re still having issues after reading that, let me know.

Thanks, I found it. Question; when i get to the “Your SQL Environment” section of the install. Do I have to use the SQL information provided by my server, or can I use any valid data base, username, and password? (told ya im a n00b…but I learn quick)
Raybdbomb Said,
August 4, 2006 @ 1:09 pm
I don’t see why you couldn’t use any valid information there, as long as you have sufficient priveleges.

Search the comments in here. It might be that the MySQL db you’re using isn’t compatible with thsi version of IPB.

Hey, I just asked IPS through the community boards if this was legal. A member of the staff said it was illegal and redirected me to a form to report piracy. You can read the full discussion at http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?showtopic=226328&st=0&#entry1414329.
