Dell Vostro AC Power Adapter Error

Text:

The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined.
The battery may not charge.
The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.

Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance.

To resolve this issue, try to reseat the power adapter.

Strike the F3 key (before the F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see power warning message again.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility
Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics.

As I said here:

Two or three times since I’ve received the laptop, I would get weird BIOS messages, saying something to the effect that “the battery is not found or not supported.” I wish I would have captured this image to find out more about what it means, but since pressing F3 to ignore has been working, I’ve been content with that thus far. Next time I get it, I’ll be sure to capture it and followup with that error message.

I’m not sure what causes it. I’m using the Dell 65W AC Adapter that came with the notebook. If I leave the power adapter as it is and reboot, the same error comes up. If I disconnect it and reconnect it, the error no longer comes up. I wonder if it’s safe to press F3 and ignore it…

I get the same message every time i startup my laptop, but I think it is because the power adapter I am using is the wrong voltage. The battery doesn’t charge on mine at all, but I take it your battery is still charging after it starts up?

I’ve had some wierd issues with the adaptor before on my vostro as well. I haven’t had the bios issue, but I did have a windows message pop up while I was using my laptop that said something to the effect that the adapter wasn’t the proper one and that the battery wouldn’t charge untill I installed the proper adapter. Unplug, replug… problem went away. It has only happened once or twice, so I am not too worried about it yet… yet…

Sounds like a different manifestation of the same issue.

My XPS M140 was giving me both - BIOS error and Windows error. My factory-supplied adapter completely died, so I got an off-brand replacement and it’s doing the same thing again. The new adapter is still alive for now.

I contacted Dell today for the same issue and was advised my adapter has a short. If you check the connection and there is no fray in the cord this is probably your issue also.I’ve only had the laptop 4 months and their sending a replacement under warranty.Getting this error could destroy your motherboard and also you will notice CPU will be at 100%.My hubby is an IT so he checked the taskbar when the error would appear.Good Luck…

Thanks for the info BSnow. The message doesn’t occur to me while in Windows, only during POST. I’m not sure it’s the same issue.
