I have this wonderful "old" inspiron 700m (It is named my 2nd Dell b/c the first one had many of the problems cited here, I sent it back, Dell happily replaced it) since it first came out circa 2004/5 It is running a bit slow and I am hoping to upgragde it's memory rather tahn buy something new (reduce re-use recycle) One can only purchase 1 GB of RAM at Dell, but the macjine seems to support 2GB. I guess this means I buy 2 cards, and install one in the front under the keyboard and one in the back slot. I am afraid to open my machine, but will do so with care and apparantly I also need to "upgrade the BIOS" which I will keep surfing to figure out. I alos worry that I will lose files stored, but suspect this is my ignorance and storage is different from RAM. Anyway your very old post was easily THE most helpful I found. Feel free to forward any suggestions as I perform this surgury on my dear old machine in these coming weeks! This is an amazing thread. I seem to remember that message at some point too. Yeah, you should be on the GMA, not the Extreme Graphics. I have a dell 700m too which has served me very well for the past few years but recently I had to reformat the entire thing due to a rootkit infection. after reinstalling the OEM HomeXP that came with the laptop, I cant use my TV-out anymore! I used to do this fine, but now when i connect the cable, it doesnt show me the "Graphics Options>Output To" menu anymore! (ok *sometimes* it does, but even then immediately disappears). I strongly believe this is due to the drivers on the Dell website not being the correct ones. I definitely do remember having a "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator" instead of the crappy "Intel Extreme Graphics 2 for mobile" that was on the dell site.
