360 xbox live banhammer (part 2)
John sent me an e-mail this morning to tell me about “round 2″ of the Xbox Live banhammer. Nobody I’ve ever helped has been banned — yet. That doesn’t mean we’re exempt.
I just checked, and my account is still OK. Time to be cautious…
This is what it looks like if you’re banned:

or maybe like this

How do they identify the Xbox 360? Do they use the device’s MAC address? That can be worked around…

From what I understand they actually ban the account, which is the piece you pay somewhere between $25 and $50 per year for.

Actually they ban the console. The account is still left intact. Nobody knows for sure what they’re checking whether it’s firmware or detecting that a backup has been played on the system. People claim it’s impossible for them to check your firmware, I wouldn’t be so sure…

Ouch, that seems a bit harsh. I wish you luck with not being banhammered. I need my halo buddies…

Even though we haven’t played in like weeks…

John: Interesting! It was the other way around last time I thought…
Yea, I think I agree, if you read the xbins xbox live logs, you can see they actually check for the security sectors. It just takes one bad game to get banned…

John is correct. They ban the system and not the account. After your system is banned you can still login to your account and use it on another system.

John updated me saying he wasn’t actually banned, his daughter unplugged the cable… lol!

My brother just found out that he’s banned. Crap.

HELP ME!!!!

I wonder if it would work to buy a new unit, swap the drive, then return the unit. Problem is, they don’t really make Samsungs anymore. I’ll research it.

Swapping the drive will not do it, it’s banned at the cpu/board level. I did read on xbox-scene that there’s a way to unban a console but it involves extracting the CPU Keyvault, whatever that is, from an unbanned console and injecting it into the banned console. It’s a very technically complex process apparently and there’s currently no published steps on how to do it. Short of your 360 doing the RROD dance, you’re pretty well stuck with the banned unit.

I was pretty paranoid last night when I finally went on live for the first time since modding… the dec update was rather scary but so far no problems…
What game were you playing when you got baned? Do you think maybe there are inconsistencies with the originals and the backups that MS can pickup on?
Raybdbomb Said,

Yea, stealth patches and security sectors. efnet #fw has good info on it.

my live is still working and ive been flashed for 4 months now. i made one mistake by taking nhl 09 unpatched online like an idiot. well i played for about 3 hours about a week ago and havent went online with it again. theres a patch for it now and i wonder if i should patch it and reburn or if its too late?
Raybdbomb Said,

If you flashed 4 months ago, there’s no way you have any issues. Assuming you used a “current” firmware — iXtreme — it doesn’t allow you to go online unless the game is patched.
I wouldn’t sweat it.
After all, if you’re going to be banned, you’re already banned. It’s not like they forget about you if you don’t go online for X days.
