PS2 Memory Card Ordered

Because I needed a PS2 memcard, I bought one on eBay. The one I bought is 128MB and it was $24 shipped. It seems like that is awfully cheap, considering the 8MB and 16MB cards go for that much or more.

Upon further investigation, it is listed as 128MB and referred to as 128MB on that sale as well as everywhere else I looked, but on NYKO’s site, they say both 128MB and 128Mb (which is of course 16MB). I’ve researched it for about an hour and can’t tell which it ACTUALLY is, but every specification list tell me it’s ACTUALLY 128MB and not 128Mb. I e-mailed both Nyko and the seller, so we’ll see eventually which it actually is.

If it turns out to be 16MB I’ll be a little miffed, because those goes for considerably less than what I paid, and then it would be as if it was listed as 128Mb JUST to confuse and falsely advertise the product. LAME.

Nintendo DS Ordered

Since I’m selling my iPod that I bought a week or so ago, I figured I might as well put that money to good use and buy a Nintendo DS.

I plan to play games on it via flash cart, but it appears as though you need to have the cart of a game before the flash cart will work. More on that here, here, here and here.

So since Mario Kart DS has now practically millions playing with the Nintendo WiFi with friend codes, I figured I’d buy a used DS+Mario Kart DS Combo from eBay. Watching these items for a few days showed me that the least one of these would go for used and in good condition was ~$100. After about 2 days of bid sniping, I was able to purchase one for $100.01 before shipping, or $110 shipped.

So potentially the DS will play all of the GBA games as well as DS games. This should replace the GBA+ flashcart combo I just bought (if the flashcart ever comes). So once I get the DS+ flashcart going, I’ll probably sell the GBA+ flashcart.

Need a PS2 Memcard

I either bought my PS2 without a memory card, or I lost the mem card(s) that it came with. I purchased the PS2 used on craigslist for $100 in July, 2005, and it came with two wireless logitech controllers.

Most likely I lost the memory cards. So, I gotta buy some.

Unlike the XBoX, you really need memory cards to play any PS2 game. So I can’t really play the PS2 until I get this. And by that I mean I really CAN, but I can’t REALLY, if you get my drift.

PS2 Works 99%

The PS2 now works ~99%. That is to say, most of the time I can get it to boot a DVD. Purogamer suggested to me:

As for your fliptop, Are you just swapping the discs when you’re testing to see if they work, or removing the magnet and ejecting the tray? Your ps2 loads the contents of the disc into it’s memory, which is how swapping works, so you have to eject that tray to clear the memory. That’s why the psx cd loaded, and then suddenly the CD swap magic worked. The system had “psx cd” in it’s memory and loaded it. This is fine normally but if your ps2 acts up, you’ve got to eject the tray to clear it’s memory. Sometimes you need to unplug it for a while for the memory to erase itself.

What I wanted you to do is put the DVD in the tray, push it in, and in the second between when it closes, and starts to spin, put the magnet on the dvd and let it do it’s thing. If it’s starting with a clean memory, it should load the swap magic dvd just fine. If not it’s hard to say if it’s the disc or the laser but i’d lean towards the laser considering how flaky it seems to be.

Doing that at first worked great. I popped out the DVD, put the swapmagic in, and it worked. I tried it again and it worked. I came back hours later and it didn’t work. Hours later, it worked. And so on.

It appeared to be working only intermittently. I’ve found that if I keep ejecting and reinerting the DVD, it will EVENTUALLY load. It sounds like there are some laser problems that might be an issue down the road. But for now, it works good enough.
