Gentoo Linux
I’ve been using FreeBSD as my *nux for the past year or so. The problem is, it’s not linux so it doesn’t very well run software or games designed for linux. It can run most of the items under linux compatability mode, but that’s a hassle to go through.
The thing I really like about FreeBSD is how they have the software organized into ports, and it’s really easy to access and install the free software that is available. Gentoo has “portage” which I’m told is similar to FreeBSD’s “ports”.
So I’m going to install Gentoo probably this weekend and we’ll see how it goes

Autodesk job (cont’d)
Looks like the job at Autodesk is going to work out. I received the following e-mail on Wednesday, May 19th:
Ray,
OK, I finally have all the approvals and can make the following
non-binding (informal) offer:
Start Date: May 26
Salary: $18/hour
Please let me know if you have any concerns with this offer. I
apologize for the delays in the process.
We are putting together the formal offer letter, which (by Autodesk
policy) is contingent on a background check which takes several days.
It will probably be easiest if we just plan to have you review & sign
the offer when you come in on May 26. I will send you a status update
sometime later in the process.

Thanks,
Bryan
I am filling out the employment application/background check right now, so hopefully they don’t find out about my time in jail or drug habits. *cough*
Internship at Autodesk (continued)
So, I wasn’t accepted for the position of software intern at Autodesk, but that’s fine. They evidently liked me enough to consider me for another position, an intern at the graphics lab. I had an interview for that this past Monday and it looks like that job is going to work for me.
I’ll know hopefully by Thursday of this week but at latest by Monday of next week. I was told that if it works out, starting pay for an intern could be between $13 and $18 per hour, which sure beats my recently raised wage of $8 per hour at University of Portland.
So I’m still really looking forward to this job. Still anxious to hear whether or not it’s going to work out for me. Still.
