PS2 ALMOST there…
I had some time to finally work on my PS2. The new AV cord DID fix the display, as I assumed it would. So I was finally able to go back and look at what was initially wrong with it.
Purogamer suggested (back in July, 2005) that I try to just connect the magnetic device from the fliptop to the top of the DVD to see if that booted up as seen here. At first I was unable to get this to boot with my swapmagic boot CD or boot DVD. I then tried a PSX cd, and it booted just fine. Trying again with the swapmagic DVD led to the “browser/configuration screen“, meaning that it couldn’t recognize the DVD in the drive. I tried again with the swapmagic CD, and it booted this time. When inserting the regular PSX cd, it said “Not a valid PS2 disc“. I’ll have to try a couple of other discs to see if I can get anything to load from the boot screen. My swapmagic discs aren’t scratched at all, so I’m not sure why the only work intermittently or not at all. I can get the CD version to work intermittently, but I’ve yet to see the DVD version work. It spins like it’s trying to read, then stops. I’ll have to try this more later.
This is the closest the PS2 has been thus far. It’s coming along. Someday it just might work as expected…
Edit: I tried a couple DVDs now, and none of them work in this PS2. I distinctly remember playing a DVD game as soon as I got the PS2, so maybe the reader went bad? I’ll have to test that more later too…

[...] The PS2 now works ~99%. That is to say, most of the time I can get it to boot a DVD. Purogamer suggested to me: As for your fliptop, Are you just swapping the discs when you’re testing to see if they work, or removing the magnet and ejecting the tray? Your ps2 loads the contents of the disc into it’s memory, which is how swapping works, so you have to eject that tray to clear the memory. That’s why the psx cd loaded, and then suddenly the CD swap magic worked. The system had “psx cd” in it’s memory and loaded it. This is fine normally but if your ps2 acts up, you’ve got to eject the tray to clear it’s memory. Sometimes you need to unplug it for a while for the memory to erase itself. [...]
